Harry Totter

My tot has a scar on his forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt. And I joke that I'm dressing him up as Harry Potter for Halloween.

(You can't see the jagged, bolt-ish bend beneath his hair.)

But I knew the glasses and cape were a no-go, so I doctored up a photo instead.  Meet my boy, Harry TOT-ter.

As a side note, I think scars add character.  Check out mine below:

Have a nice, accident-free weekend!

Justin Rosé and the Golf Club Sandwich

Tomorrow, in honor of this year's British Open, I'm preparing my golf enthusiast husband a hole in one meal.  It's un- FORE -gettable...

For lunch, I'm serving:

Gillian's "GOLF CLUB" Sandwich

Recipe yields 1 serving

Ingredients:

3 slices bacon
2 slices Ciabata bread, pressed
2 tablespoons avocado with sea salt, black pepper and evoo
½ ounce alfalfa sprouts
3 slices (1 ounce) cooked deli turkey breast
3 slices (1 ounce) cooked deli honey ham
2 slices tomato
Red onion, thinly-sliced

Directions:

Place bacon in a heavy skillet.  Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown.  Drain on paper towels.

Spread each slice of Ciabata bread with avocado.  On one slice, place bacon, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, red onion, turkey and ham. Then top with the second slice of bread.

In keeping with the golf theme, I'm also serving "chip it in" chips with sweet chili and sour cream.  However, if you'd prefer a more healthy side, you could offer lightly-dressed greens instead.

For dessert, I'm serving:

Martha Stewart's "TEE-TIME" Cupcakes

And as a treat for myself, for working so hard, I think I'll have a glass (or two) of  "JUSTIN ROSÉ."

Have a great weekend!

Momma Groucho

Inspector Gadget, am I?  Or better yet, Inspector Clouseau... ?

But no, I think Momma Groucho has a better ring to it.  How shall I say? A certain je ne sais quoi...

Nonetheless, I'm crackin' the case to review a few interesting, if not, puzzling, products.  So, be on the lookout.

In the meantime, how 'bout a vote?  :)

Tots Illustrated

I wrestled with the sheets in a semi-state of sleep, as my husband woke to watch his show.  And lucid thoughts came clear...

I saw his mug on the cover of a magazine.  Mulligan, that is.

* If confused, Mulligan is in reference to my son, Aksel Mulligan-Kohn.

But really, my husband flicked the telly on at little after four am this morning to watch Irish golfer, Rory McIlroy, tee off in the 2011 Open Championship.  And as I said, in a haze of sleep, the golf dreams and hair parallels rushed forth, all too real...

Live from the ESP Dream Studio, I commentated:

"It's a shame, Nick (Faldo)," I said, "Such an upset after three days of beautiful, error-free golf.  But it's over.  After that last triple-bogey seven, Rory's gone and thrown it away."

"You're certainly right," he replied.

"But there's hope for the game just yet," as Kid Mulligan shown through the fog, his locks blowing on the links.

"Hold your breath.  This is it," he continued.

(A BRIEF PAUSE)

Now you know how it ends... the dream.  My boy was victorious!

But seriously, I couldn't help but make the comparison.  For one, my kid's got the hair.  Can you deny it?

And two, he's got good form.  Just see for yourself.

Not to mention, with a family name like Mulligan...

My kid, and his hair, make me happy!  If you know what makes you happy, link-up here.  Or click on the cute pic below...

A Curl and a Boy!

This is the true story of a curl and a boy...

My boy.  His curls.

And it's unFROgettable!  Not really, but it is something.

In little under eight weeks, for example, since Aksel's first haircut, he's gone from leader of the Rat Pack, to owner of a rats' nest.  And it came to a messy head (literally) two nights ago, after I successfully detangled his back curls, or shall I say, dreads.

Once the hair was unknotted (which was a feat in itself), the wet curls coiled neatly at the nape of Aksel's neck.  As I sat back, I made an unsettling hair realization...  MY KID HAS A CURL MULLET!

And I don't want him to face hair ridicule (because I've been there), or look like any one of these characters below:

[IMAGE SOURCES:  ONE TWO THREE FOUR]
So, a second haircut is in fast order.  But I have a question first:  Do you think a curl mullet is an acceptable hairstyle for a toddler?

True Blood: Fairy Loathing in Louisiana?

I'm indifferent about vampires, but I love HBO's True Blood.

After watching last week's season four premiere, namely Sookie and Granddaddy Earl's fight scene (shown below), it came to me.  We might just have an episodic case of fairy loathing in Louisiana.

Not to be confused with Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Although, if I'm being honest, my blog header photo bears a striking resemblance to this series of Loathing photos.  What do you think?

Baby Talk without the Babble starring Johnny 'Be-A-Good-Boy' Depp and Benicio Del Toddler.  I might be on to something here?

Anyhow, I can't wait for tonight's new episode...

The Three Little Pigs: A Financial Fairytale

Once upon a time, there were three little pigs.  Or rather, three little piggy banks.  There was momma pig, daddy pig, and baby pig.  And each one, had his own skills for saving.   So, it should be no surprise to say their fortunes were built of different make and style.

For instance, Momma Pig didn't save too much.  When she saw something she had to have, she gobbled gobbled gobbled as any greedy pig might.  With a pleasing OINK upon purchase, and a quick curl of her tail, her fortune was muddy, and weak at best.

On the flip side, Daddy Pig was conservative.  A boar, one might say.  In fact, he saved by day, and counted at night.  When he brought the bacon home, he didn't take one bite!  He'd repeat...

"A little piggly, needs room to wiggly... so save, I must must must, or Th-Th-Th-Th-Th... That's All Folks, it's bust bust bust!"

I forgot to mention...

In the great land of Moneyville, there roamed a ravenous, coin-hungry wolf who preyed on unsuspecting piggies (and their banks).

"Little pig, little pig, let me buy," he'd say, "or I'll shop, and I'll drop 'til your fortune's run dry."

Now obviously, all the empty piggies were most at risk.  I mean, if Wolf came a' callin' and you had no savings, your bank was bust!

To be COIN-tinued...

Fairytale aside, the three pigs titled in the photo above, belong(ed) to each one of us, respectively.  In fact, my husband, Mark, made his in the early 80s!

I was just tickled to have all three in my possession, and wanted to share.  It's also safe to say that we (my husband and I) have different financial behaviors, but in fairness, they're not as opposed as my story depicts.

In a relationship, money can be such a difficult topic to discuss, or come to terms with even.  My parents, for example, had a really hard time synergizing.  My father was the saver, and my mother, the spender.  It was, over time, a great point of distress in their marriage.  As a result, I've always been timid to discuss financials, to be honest about my purchases, etc.

I'm working on it though...

More important, we want to teach our child, Aksel, to have a good relationship with money, to know the value of a dollar earned, and to give when he's got plenty.  (Fingers crossed!)

Mom Thumb.

I value my husband's opinion... selectively.  I'm not gonna lie.

However, the ol' hubs made a wise observation yesterday, and even I have to admit he's right.  (It feels unnatural though.)

But, here goes nothing...

So, we went to our local Outback Steakhouse for dinner last night.

While we waited patiently for our Bloomin' Onion to arrive, I encouraged Aksel to use his Joey crayons to color.

As usual though, he struggled to properly grip the crayons, preferring instead, to clank them one against the other.

Not to mention, the occasional bite.

So, being the artistic person in the relationship, and feeling it my responsibility to develop our child's artistic talents, I took lead in suggestively correcting Aksel's failed effort.

"Buggy," I said, "hold the crayon like this."

My husband interrupted immediately with a laugh, and said, "Aksel, listen to daddy.  Don't hold your crayon like mommy."

Forgetting, I looked down.  This is what I saw.

"Oops!  I'm Mom Thumb!" I said.  "Good call, Lovey."

We then chuckled and ate more pumpernickel bread.  So, as I was saying, I value my husband's opinion...

The Legend of Bluetooth.

The legend of Bluetooth goes a little like this.  Ahem.

And mind you, I'm not referring to the wireless device now popular the world over.  On the contrary, Bluetooth was a boy...

A lad with 18 pearly whites, and curls on top, he traveled the carpet countryside in search of nibbles, snacks, and dustball munchies.

Chomp, chomp, chomp!

All day and night he chewed.

Nom, nom, nom!

To no satisfaction.

But Bluetooth didn't know a spell had been cast long before his birth, and there was only one cure.  To fill his growling belly, and overturn the passed-down [Munchie Mulligan - I Need One More] curse, he would have to acquire the one perfect vittle to turn his teeth blue.  To turn his stomach, too.

Whence came this sickly snack?  He would soon find out...

All jokes (and mystic lore) aside, Aksel ate the tip of a blue Crayola crayon yesterday.  Surprisingly, he continued doodling (with blue wax fastened neatly on his bottom tooth) to create his first drawing.

Myself, I got a chuckle.  Bluetooth, I called him.

I also got inspired remembering the most darling display of children's artwork here, and subsequently started thinking in shades of blue...

I love this design by Brooke Giannetti of Velvet of Linen!
(It's not far from my living room now. See top.)

This is currently my dream kitchen!
