When Words Fail

Music has enriched Aksel's life so very, very much. Before he spoke, he sang. Or in simpler terms, before I "understood" his words, I "recognized" his music. (See videos below.) And oh, was it joyous to hear?! Because there was such a long, lonely stretch of time when I didn't think Aksel would talk, and I was heartbroken!

But music is the universal language, right? Funny, I never knew at 21, when I advocated for "Save the Music" (as a platform in Miss South Carolina), and visited countless classrooms in and around my hometown, attesting passionately to its "universality" - that music, would actually come to save me (and my son) - that I would come to truly live and believe in its power? (Aside from the instantaneous joy and gratification I felt in "making" music.)

Because music has changed my life, and my child's life, too!

But really, Aksel lives and breathes for music. From the moment he wakes, till the minute he rests, my child is forever humming, drumming (on his belly), and strumming. And I'm not exaggerating!

In fact, Aksel rhythmically "drums" on his belly so much, that over the years, he's incurred dark callouses and bruising on both sides. And as concerned parents, we've tried, with varying success, to "replace" the behavior with real instruments - bongos, shakers, tambourines - but Aksel still prefers to truly "feel" his music. Thankfully, the self-injurious behavior has diminished some with age and maturity, but it's still a point of discussion at our well-check appointments and IEP meetings.

The true impetus for this post though, is Aksel's recent sophistication and knowledge of music. At seven-years-old, he's taken his appreciation to a whole new level, and as his mother, I'm amazed!

In the last few weeks, for example, here's a list of some of his recognitions/favorites:

  • "Mom, it's Take Five! It's jazz!"
  • Yesterday at Seabrook, "It's Jackson 5!"
  • "Tears for Fears, everybody wants to rule the world!"
  • "Watermelon Man, it's my song!"
  • Listening to Andrea Boccelli on PBS, "It's opera!"
  • "Mom, please find Anytime She Goes Away (Ain't No Sunshine) on YouTube."
  • "Careless Whisper, I need Careless Whisper."

It's just a beautiful kind of life, and on that "note," literally, I wouldn't change a thing. "When words fail, music speaks."

If It Never Stops At All.

I love the classics, and it's my hope to teach my boy to love 'em too.  So, I'm getting him started young.  Here's a perfect clip for today...

Don't get me wrong though, I also appreciate current takes on golden-era hits.  For instance, GLEE rocks, and Lady Paltrow nailed this!

Just in case you're wondering, it's a wet one here.  I love it, too!

Rain, pell, mell.  And we'll not complain if never stops at all.  We'll live and love within our own four walls.  -- The Fantasticks

We Had a Piano.

Growing up, we had a piano.  An antique, upright grand piano.  It's a shame I never learned to play.  It looked a little something like this...

My mother bought the piece on a whim, having convinced my father she'd learn to play.  Between you and me however, I think she mastered On Top of Old Smokey, and then threw the music towel in.

But that's not the point I wish to make.  Regardless of whether or not my mother played the piano well, there was music in our home.  And I'm actively carrying the tradition on...

In fact, Aksel loves listening to music.  In particular, he gets quite a thrill playing with his LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table.  To take it a step further, I believe he crawled over the other afternoon and in a very rudimentary way (obviously) babbled the ABC melody.

I love being Aksel's music teacher!  I'm having fun, and so is he.

We love ours!  What are your thoughts?

Beatlejuice, Beatlejuice, Beatlejuice...

Beatlejuice.  I thought it was just an 80's camp film about a
strung-out ghoul and girl-in-goth.  Little did I know, beatlejuice exists on more than one level.  In fact, I learned just yesterday that my child's been drinking beatlejuice for nearly a month!

BeatlejuiceBeatlejuiceBeatlejuice?!

Yes, you've read right!  Now, read this -- http://similac.com/recall/

This takes beatlemania to a new extreme, and it's not easy to digest!

Once I bugged out though and came to shaky grips with the news, the guilt came quick... I let my child down!  How could I?  Why did I?

I haven't been particularly forthright of late, but the topic hasn't come up, and what with a nine-month-old, I'm kinda short on blog time.  Here it is though... I stopped breastfeeding Aksel at about four-and-a-half months.

I won't make excuses for myself.  I was tired!  I threw the towel in.  Knowingly.  Willingly.  I'm not proud of it, but I can't take it back!  In hindsight, I realize my selfishness.

All I can say now is thank you.

Thank you friendly Costco representative for the courtesy call to inform me that the six oversized tubs of Similac Advance Early Shield Infant Formula I purchased last month were/are tainted with beatle remains and larvae.  (As of yesterday, we still had two plus containers left!)

Phew!  That's a relief to know!

I'm learning there's a lot of guilt (and worry) associated with parenting.  I'm also realizing I can't humanly be in control always.  I can only hope to safeguard my child from harm 99% of the time.

I'm not perfect, but I love my child.  I'm told that's most important.

The Pedestrian and Phrases.

As the saying goes, spring has sprung, and I couldn't be happier, really!  The trepidation I felt only days ago, to fully clothe, cover, and shield my child from winter's cold, has dissipated finally.  And I could burst into song just now, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, Zip-A-Dee-Ay...

FYI -- When I mention, or proclaim for that matter, any one of the next following phrases, take heed, because I intend to follow through:  (I'll also include the literal consequence of such phrases.)

  • Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast) I could sing a song. =   I'm going to sing a song right now.  It'll probably be a Disney selection, or even better, a Broadway hit like Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast). (It's a dream of mine to someday record a collection of children's songs.  I love music, and I think it's so important for kids to hear music from an early age.  A current, but not contemporary play in the Mulligan-Kohn household is Young Chet by Chet Baker.  I'm teaching Aksel to appreciate jazz.  It's monotonic magic!)

  • I could do a dance right here. = I'm going to stop immediately, drop all belongings, fist pump, and fast-walk in place.  I call it the Pedestrian. (I have countless photos mid-dance.  In my mind, it's similar to the infant Moro reflex described on page 104, in What to Expect the First Year (What to Expect (Workman Publishing)).)

  • On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep (On Becoming. . .)Do I need to say something? (thought or spoken) = I'm going to stop immediately, probably spout-off at the mouth, and then regret, wholeheartedly, everything I said.  (I apologize if anyone has ever felt the wrath of my hotheadedness!   My inspiration to ultimately assess & address my communication situation, mentioned in previous posts, came within two minutes of reading On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep (On Becoming. . .))
I'll talk about the phrases I soon hope my child knows I intend to take seriously, and from where such phrases came!  I'm sure I'll have them, right?  I am only three months in though, and I'm not looking to rush anything.
